UFC on Fox 2 Weigh in Results

On Saturday, January 28 (January 29 in Manila) the UFC will head to Chicago’s United Center for their second event on Fox. The sold out fight card will feature three fights on Fox, two of which will have title shot implications.

In the main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will face Phi Davis. A win for Evans will likely send him on his way to face current UFC light heavyweight champion and former friend/training partner Jon Jones. A Phil Davis win will not guarantee him an immediate title shot, but will put him very close to that opportunity.

In the co-main event, a middleweight title shot will be on the line when Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping face off inside the Octagon. The winner will face current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, most likely in Brazil.

Opening the card on Fox will be a middleweight contest between the highly ranked Demian Maia and Chris Weidman. Weidman will come into the fight as a late replacement, taking the fight on less than two week’s notice.

On tap UFC on Fox 2

The Ultimate Fighting Championship debuted on Fox in November with a single fight, and after Junior dos Santos stopped Cain Velasquez for the UFC heavyweight title in less than a minute, many fans were left wanting more. The promotion comes back to the network with UFC on Fox 2, a heartier, three-fight main card offering from the United Center in Chicago.

Title implications abound on January 28, 2012 (January 29 in Manila), as Rashad Evans has been promised a long-awaited shot at light heavyweight champion Jon Jones with a victory over Phil Davis. There are no such guarantees for Davis, but a lot could change with an impressive victory. An injury to Mark Munoz brings Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping together, and the winner of the bout between the two outspoken middleweights is expected to secure a showdown with UFC  middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva, although Sonnen remains skeptical. Also on the bill is a scrap between former title contender and decorated grappler Demian Maia and highly regarded prospect Chris Weidman.

It seems that the second UFC on Fox card will provide fight fans with much more meat as compared to the first televised Fox card which served its purpose as an appetizer. 

Dana White: Rashad Evans Wins and Remains Injury Free, He Gets Bones Jones Next

When Rashad Evans faces Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago, he will control his own destiny and his goal of facing former friend and training partner Jon “Bones” Jones next.

Speculation began to swirl last week after UFC president Dana White said in an interview that Jones was already done with his vacation and looking to get back in action sooner rather than later. He mentioned that Jones could potentially face former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson next, with most pointing at the UFC 145 fight card in Montreal as a possible landing spot.

While anything is still possible, on Tuesday when speaking with the Jim Rome Show, White said that Jones is indeed ready to get back in the cage, but if Evans wins on Jan. 28 and comes out unscathed, he’ll get his chance to face the champion.

“We’re working on it now. We’re going to obviously see what happens in this Rashad fight at the end of the month. The next fight on Fox, Rashad is fighting (Phil) Davis, so we’ll see what happens there,” White said on Tuesday.

“If Rashad wins, if Rashad comes out injury free, we’ll get the Jon ‘Bones’ Jones/Rashad Evans fight going.”

That’s obviously good news for Evans, who had to be curious what the next course of action would be should he defeat Davis.

Evans was always assured of a title shot with a win, but now that Jones is ready to return and the UFC 145 card in Montreal needs a main event, it just seemed to make sense to put the UFC light heavyweight champion at the top of that card.

As for Dan Henderson, he may have just become the biggest Phil Davis fan in the sport, because if Davis upsets Evans, then the longtime UFC and former Pride fighter will most likely get the next shot at Jones.

The UFC on Fox 2 main event will tell the tale however. If Evans wins and comes out injury free, he may finally get his chance to settle the score with Jon Jones in the Octagon.

Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson Headed to UFC 145?

UFC 145 in Montreal is currently sitting in limbo without a main event, but Jon “Bones” Jones may once again swoop in like Superman to save the day.

Just after Jones defeated Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 in Toronto, the UFC’s light heavyweight champion had said he was planning an extended vacation after four fights in 2011, but that plan has already gone south.

According to UFC president Dana White, who spoke to ESPN 1100 in Las Vegas, Jones has had enough downtime already, and he’s calling for another fight as soon as possible.

“The funny thing you should say about Jon Jones and him saying he wants some time off, he called up four days ago and said ‘okay, let’s go I’m done with vacation.’ He said he wanted to take all this time off and then they were calling me four days ago saying he wants to fight as soon as possible. He’s ready to go,” White told the radio show.

In Jones’ last fight, he helped to save that card as well when the UFC had scheduled a show on Dec. 10 in Toronto, but didn’t have a main event set in the general time as usual. Jones had just competed at the end of September with a win over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, but he stepped up when the UFC asked him to help fill the main event slot at UFC 140 just over 2 months later.

Now with the champion already done with his vacation three weeks after his last fight, White might take him up on his offer to fill the vacancy at UFC 145 in Montreal.

While nothing is set in stone yet, all signs are pointing towards a showdown with former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson.

Henderson is just coming off of his Fight of the Year performance over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139 in November. Within a week of that bout ending, he was already calling the UFC president asking for another fight.

As Montreal awaits a main event, White just may oblige him with a title fight against Jones.

“What could end up happening is Dan Henderson fights Jon Jones first, and then it would be close to the time that Rashad (Evans) fights. Or we see how things go with Rashad and if he fights him first,” said White.

Evans fights Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago. The fight card in Montreal is currently slated for March 24, so if Evans is successful in his bout against Davis, there is still the turn around factor being less than two months until a title fight, plus injuries and other things could go wrong that could prevent such a quick return.

In that case, Henderson is the obvious choice, and gives the UFC something to promote during the UFC on Fox 2 card if they opt to go that route.

Either way, Jon Jones remains the prime candidate to be at least one piece of the main event puzzle for UFC 145 in Montreal. Now it just depends on who he would face if the fight gets put together.

Another fight added to UFC on Fox 2

It looks like the card for UFC on Fox 2 is getting another fight. Announced earlier were 2 title eliminators for the UFC Light Heavyweight title and the UFC Middleweight title in bouts between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis, and between Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz. Now we can add another bout which would have implications in the Middleweight division as at has been announced that Michael Bisping coming fresh of his TUF 14 Finale win against Mayhem Miller will lock horns with jiu-jit-su ace Damian Maia in what would promise to be another entertaining fight.

I can't wait for this event, as much as I can't wait for other bouts that may grace this already packed UFC on Fox 2.

UFC on Fox 2 Features Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis, Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz

Despite what Chael Sonnen thinks or believes, he is going to fight Mark Munoz at UFC on Fox 2 in a middleweight title eliminator for the co-main event. The main event will also be a Light Heavyweight title eliminator between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis.

While no announcement has been made from UFC officials, MMAjunkie.com today first reported the news that Evans is set to face Phil Davis while Sonnen takes on Mark Munoz.

Evans most recently defeated former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 133 this past August by technical knockout.

With the victory came an hand injury that forced Evans out of action, which caused him to miss the opportunity to dethrone rival Jon Jones at next Saturday's UFC 140 pay-per-view in Toronto.

Evans' opponent that night was scheduled to be Davis himself, but an knee injury forced his exit from the fight and he's been out of action ever since.

With a victory over Davis, Evans is expected to be awarded a shot at the winner of Jones and Lyoto Machida.

Davis and Evans will headline the event, which is set for five-rounds.

As for Sonnen and Munoz, they each make returns fresh off impressive victories.

Sonnen defeated Brian Stann at UFC 136 by second round submission after dominating Stann throughout the first round with superior ground work.

The victory was Sonnen's first fight since dominating champion Anderson Silva for the better part of four-and-a-half rounds with superior wrestling and ground work before slipping up and falling to an fifth-round submission from Silva.

Many expected Sonnen to rematch Silva in the first quarter of 2012, but an shoulder injury to Silva has evidently led to a matchup with Munoz.

Munoz, a former NCAA D-I wrestling standout has claimed victory in four-consecutive fights with his most recent win coming against Chris Leben at UFC 138.

Like Sonnen, Munoz' strength is his wrestling so it will be interesting to see who truly is the more dominant ground practioner.

Munoz and Sonnen will be the co-headliner for the UFC's second event on Fox.

Evans ans Davis are at it again

It appears that a light heavyweight battle between former UFC champion Rashad Evans and rising contender Phil Davis has been re-scheduled for UFC on Fox 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago. The fight was reported by ESPN.com late Tuesday evening, citing anonymous sources.

The two were originally slated to headline UFC 133 in August, but and knee injury sidelined Davis. Evans went on to defeat Tito Ortiz at UFC 133, but was then put on the shelf with a hand injury that kept him out of a title fight with Jon Jones.

Now it appears that Evans and Davis will likely headline the UFC’s sophomore effort on Fox.

Evans (16-1-1), coming off of the victory over Ortiz, has a lot on the line. He needs a victory to keep his No. 1 contender status in tact. Evans been chasing Jones ever since his former teammate won the belt at UFC 128 in March.

Davis (9-0) faces the biggest challenge of his career, fighting a former champion. A victory over Evans would prove Davis’ place in the division, propelling him straight into title contention.
