The Pacific Xtreme Combat, a running Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion in the Asia Pacific, whose emergence in the Philippines is nothing short of great. Created by Joey Calvo a Nova Uniao BJJ Blackbelt under Renato “Charuto” Verissimo who has been training BJJ for 15 years, the promotion has surely been making waves. Given the increasing popularity and the growth of the sport of MMA, Pacific Xtreme Combat or the PXC provides a wealth of exposure to serious local fighters who would want to make it big in this young, up and coming sport.
In the early 2000’s MMA blew up with ZUFFA’s purchase of the UFC and the positive changes it brought such as unified rules in MMA and the establishment of weight classes. Soon after the growth of MMA abroad, the Philippines also followed suit with the creation of the Universal Reality Combat Championships or URCC by touted MMA promoter Alvin Aguilar. As the sport grew in the country, various organizations have also entered the country in pursuit of creating more venues for local talent to showcase their skills.
With all these venues and advancements in the sport of MMA in the Philippines, there was still something missing, something that aspiring fighters have been looking for and that is better exposure for their talents, not only in the local front but regionally and internationally as well. And this is where the brilliance of the PXC comes in, for as much as the URCC has sparked the flame of MMA in the Philippines; the PXC has arrived to pour gas on the flames taking it to the next level.
TRACK RECORD
When you look at the history of fighters from both organizations, it is very clear that the PXC has had more fighters that have signed contracts to fight in Pro events in the United States. While both companies claim to be the best breeding grounds for local MMA fighters wanting to go pro in the US and face elite competition, it appears that the PXC is the only company consistently sending out fighters. In fact, the PXC has moved more fighters to the UFC, Bellator Fighting Champions and Strikeforce than any other fight organization in the Pacific Region. Some notable fighters are Rich Clementi (UFC), Harris Sarmiento (Strikeforce), Joe Tiamanglo and most recently Jon Tuck who made an appearance on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).
RULES AND REGULATIONS
One very significant factor serious MMA fighters should consider when looking to make it to elite level competition are the rules that the organization they fight for follows. If your sight is set on the UFC, and the other major promotions in the USA, then the PXC is the choice. Not only does the PXC follow the MMA Unified Rules of Conduct, but fights take place in an octagon cage. If it was just Muay Thai or boxing that fighters are looking for, then they will feel more at home with the URCC’s 5 rope square boxing ring and absurd two, 10 minute rounds of fighting.
PUBLICITY AND EXPOSURE
Although both promotions (PXC and URCC) have great websites and a ton of videos online, the PXC is the obvious better choice for fighters to get recognized and noticed in the world of MMA. PXC broadcast live on TV5's AKTV channel which airs their fights nationwide with replays to be able to catch the fights again. I also read in a press release, that the PXC currently are working towards broadcasting fights to several US and European markets. This is great for local fighters to get noticed nationwide in the country as their fights would appear on free TV, but also gain international exposure on top of that.
Of course these are just some major factors that separate both promotions, and while they both provide a channel for fighters to showcase their talents and there may be other factors in place, if I however were laying my money on my own fight career, I would certainly look at making my living with the PXC.
correction on weight class. URCC has unique weight categories. i think no organization uses it other than URCC.
ReplyDeleteYeah, looking at it now URCC does have a different weight class structure. Mostly separated by 10 pounds each, and they also have a cruiser weight division.
Deleteits fuuny that pxc has to hide behind guys like you to bring the urcc down-whereas you never hear the urcc peeps trash talking the pxc online..just so you know the urcc has over 50 pro events under its belt the 21 pro events you wrote about is just the ones urcc does in the mANILA..urcc has spread the gospel to the province and SUBSIDIZED its development costs here in the philippines - a lot of the fighters in pxc have already fought and been developed by the urcc in the provinces-pitpitnge, ali cale, victor torre ALL found and tested by the urcc...pxc claims they breed their own champs-not so-these guys had already trained elsewhere and were already good before they got to pxc -so dont claim the credit...as for sponsors the urcc has 12 major-minor sponsors and they are ALL cash based sponsors unlike pxc which is mostly x deal. in 2011 urcc had sposnsored 21 mma tournaments around the philippines - you only have to look at the cards of legend fc and one fc to see how far the org has come in sending fighters abroad to get more exosure- did i mention exposure? urcc has partnered with one fc and has a tv deal woth espn that will showcase pinoy fighters to over 500,000,000 fans in 145 countries - whats that compared to a measley 90,000,000 audience here locally??? ( not to mention that 90 m are not all mma fans!) for the record the URCC has put on more than 50 pro fights and has an average attendance based on ticket sales of 3500 per event ,,,,stick that up your pxc nut hugging ass!
DeleteURCC sucks.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is stupid. CHeck your typos asshole and go learn some martial arts. And PXC sucks serious balls.
ReplyDeletethey dont care about their fighters!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMr. Joma Giron,
ReplyDeleteFor the sake of both parties, did you write this article by at least interviewing people like URCC's Mr. Alvin Aguilar and PXC's Mr. Joey Calvo? Don't rely on just the websites and Wikipedia for your comments and in depth analysis of both MMA events. Don't comment on touting URCC rounds as absurd unless you really know the technicalities and differences between the two MMA Organizations.Don't compare Track Records unless your information is complete. The URCC is consistently sending out fighters to different events in Asia. And mind you the UFC maybe the most famous MMA event in the world, but it is NOT THE ONLY MMA EVENT in the world. The next time you try to compare two MMA Organizations as a Mixed Martial Arts Fan and maybe a budding MMA Blogger, be aware of your responsibility in getting the right information from the right people.
paano? eh he's sucking PXC's balls...
DeleteHahaha. PXC kasi may balls. URCC walang balls.
Deletehmmm... I think what he meant was, this guy Joma Giron is paid to write for PXC. No merit. No honor.
Deletewaste of time reading this blog. go back to tondo and start peddling taho or something kasi you look like someone who couldn't even finish high school in a public school or wait, maybe you are one of those call center agents who learned a few english sentences and then pretend you speak it so well.
ReplyDeletedo us a favor, shoot yourself in the head and that will probably provide more people to read your blog. go fuck yourself.
Uy yung isa nagmamagaling o! Tapos siguro sa mamahaling eskwelahan.Pero ang pinapanuod ay ang mumurahing palabas na URCC na puro banban naman laban. Pa ingeles ingles pa, wala namang pera, cheap!
DeleteMGA DAYUHAN HINDI KA PINOY MABUTI PA LUMIPAT KA SA GUAM AT HWAG KA NA MAG SALITA NG TAGALOG. URCC is far from cheap, its invested way more than you guys in time, talent and love. PXC di kaya umunlad sa Guam kaya dito pumunta. ANG YABANG MO MAGSALITA porke may TV5 kayo.. thats the only reason you guys talk so loud about being cheap.
DeleteO sige na. Sa PTV 4 na kayo mag palabas ng URCC. At least ma te televise na rin kayo. URCC ang cheap talaga.
DeleteTHANK YOU PXC FOR USHERING IN A NEW KIND OF CRAB MENTALITY!!!
ReplyDelete^^^^ hahahaha bottom line if it wasn't for URCC paving the way of Philippine MMA, PXC wouldnt even exist! So any success PXC gains should be credited to URCC!
ReplyDeletePXC just couldn't make it big in Guam that's why they are here in the Philippines. Go back to Guam where you belong PXC!!! You can start there! Pinoy fighters in PXC hwag kayo magpaloko! Dayuhan yang mga yan they all just want to make money off of all of you. Love and support your own because in the grand scheme of things, your own will always take care of you. The URCC has been taking care and grooming their fighters 10 years and counting! Nuff said!
ReplyDeleteTo Mr. Joma Giron, you're not an MMA Fan, YOU ARE A POSER. An MMA fan appreciates all promotions. Were you paid to write this??
and FYI The Gracies cage concept was created for MMA as a marketing strategy just to differentiate it from other martial art combat sports that also use the ring. Its always been a ring you moron! K1 anybody?? But you think the cage is so cool right? Haha! Siguro die hard UFC fan ka lang talaga kaya kailangan talaga all promotions follow UFC! Well guess what! Conforming to UFC Rules or what not doesn't make you LEGIT. In fact UFC nagiging WWE na rin! All fixed! All money making! The ring keeps the fight going! No stalling! and btw, the 10 minute rounds that you think are absurd is not absurd at all. It encourages fighters to FIGHT TO THE FINISH OR PROLONG THE AGONY. Its not a gay 3 five minute round thing where you can pace yourself just like a lot of the UFC fights you see.
PS. If you think brawling it out for 2 ten minute rds is absurd you are gay as hell. ABSURD??? WTF are you saying? Thats what MMA is all about!!! It really is absurd and your gayness is making it gay!
YOU ARE A POSER!
fck you very much!
-bjjfightgirl
10 minute rounds are BOOORING... URCC walang budget kaya nga di matelevise e. Corny nyo kasi.
DeleteMR. GIRON YOU ARE A POSER!!! =)that all you can say??? why don't we just set up a match... I'm 20, 5'3 female and i weigh 115lbs. Lets go!!!!
DeleteYOu will see.. pxc will go bye bye :)
Delete@bjjfightgirl I bet mukha kang kilikili. 20 years old na di nag aahit at walang nag kakagusto sayo.
Deleteurcc is a SHIT!!!!look at ur champions!!!they all lose in their fyts outside...u dont even care with them,,gngmit nio lng mga fighters nyo pra s popularity ng urcc s ibang bansa!!!kng gsto nio mgng popular philippine mma help ur fighters!!give them moral support!!URCC was a USER!!F*CK!!!!USER!!!UR A LOSER!!!!
ReplyDeleteBAKIT SINO BA PRINODUCE NG PXC FROM THE GROUND UP??? WALA... you guys just bank on talent that's already made a name for themselves outside PXC. Sus.
DeleteTo "Mr. Anonymous"...you must have small-man syndrome because you like to talk shit and hide your real name! If you really think the UFC is becoming WWE, then you are an idiot and don't know anything about the fight world. I could care less about the PXC or the URCC....however, the tone of your stupid posts tell us all who the better fight is. I understand how hard it may be to hear the truth...but the fact that you are getting so mad is really pathetic.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you want to talk about the quality of fighters....didn't Jon Tuck (not even a PXC champ yet) knock the $#%K out of Edward Folayang in less than 8 seconds. If that is the toughest guy in the URCC...then i can only imagine what a PXC champ can do.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteHow about small girl syndrome =) and Juan Dela Cruz isn't exactly your real name right? Hahaha... ok fine the sore posters lose, but who said anything about winning or losing?
DeleteI don't think anybody was talking about quality of fighters but now that you mention it, PXC should not take credit for fighters they didn't produce like Jon Tuck. That was Guerilla Warfare NOT PXC. Bottomline, and with respect to both parties, URCC and PXC should not have even been compared to begin with. But I do believe PXC should base themselves in Guam where they started, coming here is like land grabbing. Honestly I have to agree with PXC ushering in a new kind of Crab mentality. Support PXC and you're not so Filipino to me.
URCC= Amateur PXC= PRO. Simple as that.
ReplyDeleteI welcome PXC to the Philippines. Competition is what the MMA in the Philippines needs, not a URCC monopoly. PXC will force URCC to improve its game. Hopefully with PXC competing for fighters the fighters will see an increase in pay and benefits from these organizations. If the fighters see an increase in pay, potential fighters from all the boxing clubs and Muay Thai fighters will make the switch over to MMA. This would further improve the MMA pool in the Philippines.
ReplyDeleteCompetition is a good thing, and all those who claim that PXC is just bringing down Filipino fighters probably never thought about asking how the fighters feel about the added attention they are getting with PXC now in the Philippines. URCC has had a monopoly on the MMA scene here in the Philippines for the past 10 years. How has the Filipino MMA fighter benefited from it since? Yes other MMA organizations are here in the Philippines but none with the scope like URCC, until now with PXC. So before you closed minded people say that PXC should leave, give them a chance and see how the Filipino fighters can potentially flourish with 2 professional MMA organizations in the Philippines.
Yes, someone pls get a fighters side. and I also beg to differ, URCC has not created a monopoly, they have ties with MMA promotions all over Asia including OneFC, and Filipino fighters are sent to fight there as would be the case if PXC were to base itself in Guam and not butt heads with the URCC. Then again, its a free country... we shall see. Everybody should just accept both parties as separate entities and not bash each other with who's better than who. But I do agree with the crab mentality part.
Deleteoo and its also grounds for disunity... there's already so many MMA teams in the country tapos dalawa pa MMA promotion? dapat isa lang para yun na mismo yung place where all teams unite in representing our country abroad. Kaso like all things in the Philippines mahilig sa factions.
DeleteIn terms of monopoly I'm talking just about in the Philippines, where majority of the Filipino fighters are located. Having ties with other MMA promotions around asia means nothing for the Filipino fighters where they mostly fight in the Philippines.
DeleteDisunity? Do we need one promotion to represent the Philippines? Or do we need good fighters to represent the Philippines? Personally I'd rather have the latter. I'll reiterate what i've said, having 2 promotions in the Philippines will create competition between these fight promotions for fighters. Since these fighters are now being competed for on a level they haven't seen I'd expect their pay and benefits to increase. If their pay and benefits increase they will be able to spend more time fighting and training and less time with their day job. If they spend more time fighting and training they will get better and be better able to compete on an international level. If you don't want this and you just ONLY want URCC to promote fighters abroad, then you're not for the fighters but for the organization.
You can argue all you for which is better for the country, but only the fighters will be able to tell. As the best fighters will go to the better fight promotion as they are being compensated better for their talent. Not by locking in fight camps and their fighters to one promotion.
One promotion battling out the best is what we need. Competition for fighters will kill the MMA business in the Philippines. When time comes that fighters will expect more than promotions can give both PXC and URCC will go out of business. Gradual increase in TF and TF based on caliber of fighter is the only way. Remember no MMA promotions, no place for fighters to fight but abroad. While you Sir Mike Varagas are pro fighter which is really good for our Pinoy fighters, you should also take into account the business side long term of our Philippine based promotions.
DeleteYou really think that the 2 promotions would over pay for fighters that they end up ruining each other? You're assuming that Filipino fans only care about a select few fighters, that no one will ever be an up and comer. If fighters become so expensive they deserve to go to International, you don't want that? That's the whole point!!!! For those fighters to go international and represent the Philippines!!!!!! The Filipino fighter pool is so big that if either fight promotion can't find fighters because the fighters are too expensive, they do not deserve to be in business. You can't throw a stone without hitting a training fighter with some talent here in the Philippines that would be affordable to add to a fight card. Get real LOL!
DeleteMy point si Anonymous... I think you should get real also Mike kasi ganyan talaga sa negosyo. Parang NBA lang yan, the owners vs. players. Madali lumaki ulo ng Pinoy. Kung bibigyan mo agad ng malaking TF even if they don't deserve the rate at their fighting record ubos budget ng promotion. Kawawa naman tayo mga Pinoy na hindi makalipad sa ibang bansa para makapanood kasi dederecho na agad sa ibang bansa international. Yung isang promotion place to unite. Dun nagkakaisa ang lahat ng Pinoy MMA teams at yung pinaka magagaling isasabak sa ibang bansa... one team one country. Anyway, titingnan nalang natin kung ano mangyayari. Thank you nalang sa parehong promotion at more power!
DeleteAnonymous. First I would like for you to read up on the concepts of a Monopoly and Market Competition. What you are asking for is a MONOPOLY. Second if fighters ask for too much of a talent fee the fight promotions do not have to have the fighter fight, and instead the fight promotion can choose a cheaper fighter. That fighter that was too expensive will then have to reevaluate where he stands with his choice of a TF and then either not get anymore fights or reduce his TF. And if fighters have a high TF it must be because they can fight international. From what I gather you'd rather profit off of the fighters than watch them succeed.
DeleteThe URCC is the first ever MMA event in the Phils established by the founder of MMA in the country-Alvin Aguilar. He was also the very first homegrown Filipino to introduce the country to Gracie BJJ. He's also the very first homegrown Filipino BJJ Blackbelt etc etc..
ReplyDeleteThe PXC is a Guam based MMA event trying to gain ground in the Phils.
The URCC seeks talent out all over the Phils, gives these talented Filipino fighters a chance to showcase their skills and as they get better, they get a chance to fight abroad where competition is much stiffer.
Fil fighters have a chance to move up in both the URCC and the PXC but the URCC is local, thus they focus more on the local talent while inviting foreign competitors to come over and try their fighting luck with the Fil talent we have here.
Ofcourse the ultimate goal of the URCC and maybe also of the PXC is to develop talent good enough for top promotions like the UFC etc..
PEACE OUT!!!!!---DLSU TGP
URCC Rules, but May Masuda sucks. She had backbone because she sucks a black belt's cock. The irony of "leave the ego out the door" motto, full of herself and full of ego.
ReplyDeleteSupport our co filipino they are also doing the hardwork for our country. Respect
